Most couples reach the decision to adopt for the
same two reasons-the strong desire to raise children, and the inability
to bear their own biological children together. But once they reach
the decision to adopt, couples take widely different paths to reach
their adoption goals. Adoptive couples universally confront fear
of something they likely know little about-the process of adoption.
There are dozens of questions to ask. There are either rumors to
be confirmed, or myths to be dispelled. There are very difficult
questions to ask about who you are, what you stand for and what
you are willing to do in order to reach your family goals. We were
no different.
Karen and I were extremely lucky. Once we decided
to pursue adoption, we immediately and miraculously fell into a
targeted situation. But, like everyone else, we had questions and
fears. We needed social workers to facilitate the adoption, home
studies, general education and guidance. That is when we met Gentle
Care. At every turn they met or exceeded our expectations. Throughout
the entire process the staff was organized, professional, empathetic,
responsive, educative and true to its' name-gently caring.
When it came time for us to consider a second
child, we never hesitated to walk through the process again with
Gentle Care. This time we went through the entire regular process.
But Gentle Care's fine and compassionate service remained something
we could rely upon through the long months and, ultimately, two
years before we succeeded again.
Our own experience with Gentle Care was so positive,
and so meaningful, that we have done our best to "give back,"
in whatever ways we have been able. In my case that has meant the
pleasure and honor of serving on the Board of Directors. In Karen's,
it has been fostering, facilitating, volunteering or just spreading
the good word of adoption.
